Botox Cosmetic Procedures

Many wrinkles are actually creases that have been worn into the skin by making the same expression thousands of times. These "expression" lines, formed by the repeated contraction of a muscle under the skin in that area, are often called frown lines or crows feet.

The board certified dermatologists, providers and staff of Dermatology Associates, exemplify the highest standards in safety and technique available today. Listed by the ASAPS as the most popular non-surgical cosmetic procedure with over three million procedures done in 2005, Botox is a safe, affordable way to improve one's appearance.

What is it?

Botox is a purified protein produced by the clostridium botulism bacteria. Treatments use extremely small amounts of Botox and it does not spread throughout the body.

How does it work?

Using a tiny needle, a few drops of Botox are injected into the muscle responsible for the wrinkle. When Botox is injected into a muscle, it blocks the nerve impulse from reaching that area, and as a result the muscle relaxes, the overlying skin relaxes, and the wrinkles in the skin gradually soften and often disappear.

What's it for?

The most common areas for Botox treatment are frown lines between the eyebrows, horizontal forehead lines, and crow's feet. However, there are many other areas that can benefit from Botox treatments. Botox has recently been FDA approved for the treatment of excessive sweating or hyperhidrosis of the underarms, hands and feet and the providers at Dermatology Associates have a vast amount of experience in treating this condition.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Botox affect other facial expressions or create numbness?

No, Botox does not affect the nerve. So there is no numbness in the area of injection. Also, the effect of Botox is only in the immediate area of the injection. Therefore, the muscles related to other expressions are unaffected.

How long does a Botox treatment last?

Usually three to five months, at which time another injection is required. After several treatments, the effects of Botox may begin to last longer, sometimes up to six or eight months.

Is it safe?

Botox has been safely and successfully used in ophthalmology for over ten years, and for wrinkle therapy for more than a decade. The only possible side effects are temporary and localized in the area of injection.

Is Botox for everyone?

There are very few restrictions regarding Botox. Patients who are pregnant or have a neurological disease should not be treated.

Does it hurt?

When Botox is injected there is an initial minor sting for a few seconds. Once the injection is complete, there is usually no discomfort.
